Comparison

Watermelon vs Flowmondo

Honest comparison for UK buyers choosing between an independent automation consultancy and a Zapier Platinum Solution Partner. Where they win, where we differ, when to pick each.

What this page is for

If you're a UK business shortlisting automation consultancies and Flowmondo and Watermelon are both in the mix, this page is for you. Written by Watermelon, so it's not impartial — but every claim about Flowmondo here is taken directly from public sources (their website, the Zapier Solution Partner Directory, Companies House). If we got something wrong we'll fix it; email charlie@itswatermelon.com.

Bottom line up front: Flowmondo is a strong Zapier-led consultancy with deep ecommerce vertical specialism and 13+ years of trading history. Watermelon is a younger, independent (no partner badges, no commissions) fractional automation consultancy that works cross-platform. The right answer depends on what you're trying to do.

What Flowmondo does well

Three honest strengths:

  1. Ecommerce depth. Flowmondo has shipped automation projects for retailers, DTC brands and wholesalers consistently for over a decade. If you're a Shopify or BigCommerce brand looking for a partner with a thick playbook of similar engagements, that's real value.
  2. Zapier credentials. Zapier Platinum is the highest published tier in Zapier's Solution Partner programme. Whatever you think about partner economics, the badge means Flowmondo has been doing high-volume Zapier work for years and has the support escalation paths to back it.
  3. Multi-platform fluency at the engineer level. They work with Make.com, Xano and n8n as well as Zapier — the team isn't single-platform. Not every Zapier-Platinum partner can say that.

If those three things describe what you need, Flowmondo is a credible answer.

How Watermelon is structurally different

Three differences worth understanding before you choose:

1. Independence vs partner economics

Flowmondo is a Zapier Platinum Solution Partner. That tier earns recurring referral revenue from Zapier on subscriptions referred. It's a published programme, not a secret — Zapier publicises the partner tiers on its Solution Partner Directory. Most credible UK Zapier consultancies are in this programme.

Watermelon isn't in it. We earn nothing on your Zapier subscription — or your Make, n8n, HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion, Airtable subscription either. The reason isn't ideological — it's that we've found commission economics quietly bend recommendations toward the commissioned platform. We'd rather have the freedom to tell you to leave Zapier when n8n self-hosted would cost 90% less.

2. Vertical breadth vs vertical depth

Flowmondo's brand is built around ecommerce. That's their playbook, their case studies, their referral network. If you're ecommerce, that's value. If you're a recruitment agency, a law firm, a B2B SaaS company or a creative agency, you're a second-shape account.

Watermelon is cross-industry by design. We ship pages and patterns for agencies, ecommerce and DTC, recruitment, professional services, B2B SaaS and accounting firms. For most UK SMEs that aren't ecommerce, breadth wins.

3. Project consultancy vs fractional CAO model

Flowmondo's typical engagement is a project, sometimes followed by a retainer. Watermelon's typical engagement is a project followed by — or replaced by — a fractional Chief Automation Officer retainer: 2–3 days a month of senior automation leadership embedded in your business.

That's a different commercial relationship. Project consultancies optimise for landing and finishing. Fractional leadership optimises for staying useful month after month.

When you should pick Flowmondo

  • You're an ecommerce or DTC brand. Their vertical depth genuinely matters.
  • You've already committed to Zapier and want the most-credentialled UK partner. Platinum is Platinum.
  • You want a partner with a 13-year trading history and a thick reference list. Watermelon is too young to provide that — we're upfront about it.
  • You prefer project-based engagements with optional retainers, rather than embedded leadership.

When you should pick Watermelon

  • You're not ecommerce. Agencies, professional services, recruitment, SaaS, finance — any vertical where ecom-shaped consulting doesn't fit.
  • You want platform-independent advice. No Zapier-tier loyalty, no preferential treatment for any tool.
  • You want fractional CAO leadership embedded for the long run, not a project handover.
  • You explicitly want zero commission economics. Your fee is our income, full stop.
  • You value flat-fee, publicly-listed pricing bands. No quote-only sales process.

A note on partner commissions

We write about partner commissions in detail on our Make.com consultants, HubSpot consultants and Zapier experts pages. The short version: Zapier Solution Partners, HubSpot Solutions Partners, Salesforce Consulting Partners and Make.com Partners all earn recurring percentages on the SaaS subscriptions they refer. The percentages are 10–25% on ARR depending on programme and tier. This is a legitimate business model — it funds free pre-sales work and lower implementation fees — but it does create a structural bias toward the commissioned platform.

We don't take any of those commissions. That choice means our implementation fees are full price (no commission subsidy) but our recommendations are unconflicted. That's the trade.
