Comparison

Watermelon vs Cobry

Honest comparison for UK buyers choosing between a platform-independent automation consultancy and a Google Cloud Premier Partner. Where they win, where we differ, when to pick each.

What this page is for

If you're a UK business shortlisting automation consultancies and Cobry and Watermelon are both in the mix, this page is for you. Written by Watermelon — partial — every fact about Cobry here is from public sources (their website, Google Cloud Partner Directory, Companies House). Got something wrong? Email charlie@itswatermelon.com.

Bottom line: Cobry is the strongest UK Google Workspace consultancy by a wide margin — Premier Partner, B-Corp, established 2013. If your automation problem lives inside Google, Cobry is a natural fit. If it doesn't, the worldview gap shows.

What Cobry does well

  1. Google estate depth. Years of focused Google work. If you're a Google Workspace shop and the automation lives in Sheets, Drive, Gmail, Forms or Calendar, Cobry's playbook is genuinely deep.
  2. Google Premier Partner badge. Highest published tier in Google's partner program. Real support escalation and product-team access.
  3. B-Corp certified. A meaningful values signal for buyers who care.
  4. UK-resident and established. Glasgow HQ, 12+ years trading, accumulated reference base.

For Google-anchored automation work, Cobry is a credible default UK choice.

How Watermelon is structurally different

1. Cross-platform independence vs Google-estate worldview

Cobry's worldview is Google-first. Apps Script, AppSheet, Looker, BigQuery — the Google estate is the playing field. That's a defined and valuable niche. But if your real bottleneck is in your CRM, finance system, helpdesk or vertical SaaS — i.e. outside Google — Cobry's strengths don't reach. They'll get you to use Google more, which may or may not be what you actually need.

Watermelon is platform-independent. We use Apps Script when it's the right tool. We use Make.com, n8n, HubSpot Workflows, Salesforce Flow, or custom code when those fit better.

2. Premier Partner commission economics

Cobry is a Google Cloud Premier Partner. That tier earns commission/discount on Google licence sales referred. Like every partner model, it's a legitimate business arrangement that creates a quiet incentive to recommend more Google.

Watermelon earns nothing on Google licences (or any other licences).

3. Managed services vs fractional CAO

Cobry's typical ongoing engagement is a managed services contract. Watermelon's is a fractional Chief Automation Officer retainer — embedded leadership rather than vendor-managed services. Different commercial relationship.

When you should pick Cobry

  • Your business runs on Google Workspace and the automation problem lives near Google.
  • You want a B-Corp certified consultancy.
  • The Premier Partner badge matters to your stakeholders.
  • You're happy with a Google-anchored worldview.

When you should pick Watermelon

  • Your bottleneck isn't in Google — it's in CRM, billing, finance, support, vertical SaaS.
  • You want platform-independent advice that includes Google but isn't anchored there.
  • You want fractional CAO leadership rather than vendor-managed services.
  • You explicitly want zero Google commission bias.
